13. Malala Wins the Nobel Peace Prize

In 2017, Malala Yousafzai won the Nobel Peace Prize! Many of you will remember her story. She was a young girl living in the mountainous region of Swat Valley in 2004. She began to speak out about the Taliban’s reign of terror on her picturesque little hometown via BBC Urdu, drawing attention to the fact that girls were routinely being told not to attend school under a threat of violence for daring to do so. Malala remained defiant, and in 2012, members of the Taliban opted to silence the young girl for speaking out. They flagged down the 15-year-old’s school bus, and shot her, point-blank, in front of her classmates. As was the will of God, she survived and went on to become a vocal advocate for educating girls. In 2014, the Nobel Prize committee chose to (rightfully) honor her resilience and courage by naming her a Nobel laureate.
