As Muslim Girl starts 2022 with new conversations, we decided to reflect on the top 10 most-read articles from 2021.

This past year was full of events; some were delightful and lighthearted, whereas others were heartbreaking and heavy.

That said, 2021 was a year when Muslim Girl witnessed more Muslim women being unapologetically themselves, opening more of the meaningful conversations that make our community thrive, and reinforcing diversity in opinions more than ever before.

And so to celebrate Muslim Girl’s biggest achievements in 2021, here’s a list of our top 10 articles that sum up the entire year.

In 2021, we tapped into a lot of meaningful conversations where we could debunk one of the major myths about our Muslim community: that culture and Islam are not the same.

There are a lot of norms in our Muslim culture that, ironically, go against the rules prescribed for us in Islam. And as more and more of the previously taboo conversations are brought to light, it was Muslim Girl’s time to address the controversy of forced marriages in Muslim communities across the world.

And so, the question is: Does Islam really support forced marriages?

As we look back at this story, we remember that this is one of the conversations that we’re still carrying with us for 2022. This story reminds us of how power can give you privilege as a predator over survivor(s).

It’s not about canceling a controversial figure for the sake of it. It’s about making sure that we stand up against rape culture, and provide a safer community for every one of us, regardless of our differences.

Sexual assault is never justified, even if you disagree with the identity of the survivor. In fact, the one quality that defines justice is that it does not involve bias. If there’s bias, then this is not justice.

Last year was also the year when more conversations were sparked about whether or not Islam really oppresses women. As part of the Muslim community, we know that Muslim women are truly elevated in Islam.

This is one of Muslim Girl’s most important conversations as we tapped into the stories of 12 Muslim women warriors laid out by Ali Olomi, a professor and historian of Middle Eastern and Islamic history and host of the #HeadOnHistory podcast.

Living under oppression and occupation for so many years has been brutal for Palestinians, but 2021 was an especially challenging year. However, 2021 was also the year we saw more and more celebrities standing up against the injustices being done to Palestinians. Besides the Hadid family, who have always been at the forefront of supporting Palestine, we’ve witnessed much more support from people of diverse backgrounds.

We’ve witnessed iconic figures like Roger Waters of Pink Floyd calling the Israeli occupation an apartheid state.

And… let’s not forget about DJ Khaled’s bizarre behavior when he copied and pasted Mohamed Hadid’s post as a message of supporting Palestine.
