Women’s Mosque of America: In the Founder’s Own Words

Would you say this is a feminist movement? Or a movement to revolutionize Islam in any way?

We definitely are trying our best to spark an Islamic renaissance. We talk so much as a Muslim community about our glorious past, and about how Islam gave equal rights to women. We talk about how, during the Golden ages in Spain, Muslims and Jews were working together, but we want to actually put this into practice. That’s why we joined the Pico-Union project, which has space for different religious groups, Jews and Christians, and now we’re the first Muslims to join this group.

Instead of talking about the Golden Age of Islam as a thing of the past, we want to see it now, and we want to see it in the future of Islam — we want to see an Islamic renaissance. We want to see the way that Muslim women were treated during the Prophet’s time.
