I’m so excited to be the one to announce Mona Haydar’s new video “Hijabi” to the #MuslimGirlArmy on none other than Muslim Women’s Day!
Last month, I got an Instagram message from Tunde Olaniran, a dope singer and performer that I’ve seen do his thang on stage twice before and was blown away. HE WAS TALKING TO MEEE! SO, I’m casually like, “what up?”
He tells me that a Muslim rapper needed peeps for her video. I was like I’m all up in that. When and where?!
I rushed to the set, late and jetlagged (had just got off a flight from New York) with a beat face and a cute ensemble.
Mona was very much so pregnant and on stage looking oh-so-dewy and rapping! I’m like whaaaaaat? She get’s off stage after her scene and greets me.
“Please don’t have your baby right now,” I joked. “I don’t want to get my outfit dirty.”
She laughed. “You are so cute. Why don’t I know you? What’s your Instagram name?”
So, yes. She’s cute. She raps. I had a few cameos. Please watch and share this video! It’s so catchy and cool. Give Mona some loooove.
And don’t forget to use the hashtag: #hijabiXmona
Artist Bio: Mona Haydar is a seminary student in New York City. She is an artist, activist and now rapper. She stands in solidarity with all peoples working towards greater beauty, inclusivity and love. In light of the current agenda to demonize and malign the bodies of women and Muslims, Mona is intentionally putting out this message now to help shift that narrative back to one that is positive and full of love.
This was the coolest thing. Started my morning off with this, very validating:-)
I disagree. It is not cool at all! It is embarrassing for me as a Muslim woman to see my fellow sister in the deen feel as though she is liberated in a way which to me is seen as being exploited.
Be careful sisters… You are representing the hijab publically, when someone in public looks at you remember they are most likely looking at all Muslim sister’s with that same lense. At least give it its right by respecting it and not engage in such provocative acts so publicly.
So what exactly was the point of the video? As I think I may have missed it.
I fear for my children. I fear for Mohammed and Khadija in 60 years times who know nothing of their religion because it has been tampered with so badly by ourselves.
What about this do you find so offensive? Are you saying women don’t have the right to feel liberated and the hijab should held them down to be docile? They’re just regular women and that’s what they’re representing.
To be frank I find most of the video rather cringe worthy. Can you please explain how this is liberation? and liberated to whom or what?
What do you find cringe-worthy about this can you explain?
Marmi,
Just smile and nod 🙂
