The First Muslim Woman Has Been Elected to Germany’s Parliament

Muslims being elected to prominent positions within their respective governments is becoming a thing now, and we love it.  Following London’s election of Sadiq Khan as mayor, Germany has now elected a Muslim woman to parliament.
Muhterem Aras has been elected in the German state parliament as a speaker.
In this historical moment, she also happens to be the first Muslim woman to take office.
Aras, 50, is part of the Green Party and won against the “populist anti-immigration party” last week.
She won by a significant majority, saying “We wrote history today.”
Her victory was unexpected, as a poll released on Thursday indicated that nearly two-thirds of Germans think Islam does not “belong” in their country.
Congratulations on this great accomplishment, Ms. Aras!
