This spectacular “blue marble” image is the most detailed true-color image of the entire Earth to date. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet. These images are freely available to educators, scientists, museums, and the public. This record includes preview images and links to full resolution versions up to 21,600 pixels across. Much of the information contained in this image came from a single remote-sensing device-NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS. Flying over 700 km above the Earth onboard the Terra satellite, MODIS provides an integrated tool for observing a variety of terrestrial, oceanic, and atmospheric features of the Earth. The land and coastal ocean portions of these images are based on surface observations collected from June through September 2001 and combined, or composited, every eight days to compensate for clouds that might block the sensor’s view of the surface on any single day. Two different types of ocean data were used in these images: shallow water true color data, and global ocean color (or chlorophyll) data. Topographic shading is based on the GTOPO 30 elevation dataset compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey’s EROS Data Center. MODIS observations of polar sea ice were combined with observations of Antarctica made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s AVHRR sensor—the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer. The cloud image is a composite of two days of imagery collected in visible light wavelengths and a third day of thermal infra-red imagery over the poles. Global city lights, derived from 9 months of observations from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, are superimposed on a darkened land surface map. 7 Reminders for Muslims That Every Day Is Earth Day

April 22 marks Earth Day – a birthday, if you will, where we do a little more to recognize what the earth has provided us, but haven’t taken the time to thank it for its fortitude. But let’s not get it twisted; every day should be Earth Day. Here are a seven reminders Muslims are…

That Time Aisha’s Honor Was Questioned — and She Prevailed

When things are difficult and we are stressed, human nature proves time and again that we naturally seek those who we admire for comfort. We go to our mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends and we turn to our favorite religious leaders. We know that these people have gone through similar trials, and there is a…

What You Can Do When Dealing With Big Decisions

Throughout our lives, we come across situations that call upon some big decisions to be made. Whether it is picking a school to attend or deciding if someone is right for your life, we struggle with committing to our choices no matter how minimal or monumental the decision is. We often feel like we need…

5 Tips to Fight the Only Jihad That Matters

Jihad Al Nafs. No, this is not the kind of Jihad almost everyone in the media and beyond is scared to the bone about — or the one that is often misinterpreted to be acts of violence on the battlefield. The fight that a Muslim takes part in is against the self, or a Jihad…

Life Without Allah Doesn’t Make Sense

Sometimes, we may find ourselves feeling distant from Islam. We may feel like our life is falling apart and that we’re hopeless or that our level of faith is at a low. We feel lost, we worry no prayer is being answered and then we ask ourselves: “How can I possibly get myself through this?”…

A Story of Perseverance and Bravery – Asiya (RA)

Every person has experienced or will experience injustice at different points in their lives. Sitting through biased lectures in classrooms, fighting with siblings, or even reading the news, injustices are present at different levels of potency. With the sweeping increase of Islamophobia in today’s global society, sometimes it feels like injustice is inevitable and that…

Why We Should Strive To Embody Zainab Bint Ali

In our daily lives today, where we are so connected to one other through social media and breaking news on the media, that it’s easy to be updated on the day to day happenings all around the globe. While there are positive things occurring constantly, most often we hear about the negative – the wars,…

Maintain Your Motivation & Productivity Through Faith

A lot of the time, we kind of hate running around places. Whether it’s running across campus from one class to another, running that mile in gym class, or running up the stairs 12 times every morning because we keep forgetting the same folder on the dresser — running can be really inconvenient in our…

Paradise Found: Positive Reflections On Dealing With Death

A Right Way to Grieve? When a Muslim loses someone to what would seem like the jagged claws of death, we recite an ayah from the Quran, إِنَّا للهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ‎ (Innalilah wa inna ilayhi rajioun). This translates to “We belong to Allah (SWT) and To Him we shall return.” I often feel that people…

Love Thy Neighbor This Eid

I come from a family lifestyle where I find myself moving to another country or state in the U.S. every three years or so – including India, Saudi Arabia, Seattle, Virginia, Dubai, and New Jersey. Although it has been a wonderful experience in itself, it has also been quite depressing. I frankly did not know…

Taking Advantage of Dhul Hijjah Even If You’re Not on Hajj

Eid is a very distinct holiday in the minds of most Muslims across the globe. It calls into focus images and memories of sparkling clothes, henna designs, high heels and brutal pre-celebration beauty regimens. But as we get older — or perhaps it’s simply my own personal case — we start to slow our strut…

Coming Home: Life as a Transgender Convert

Coming to Islam for me wasn’t an exceptional experience. The tendency for people who have converted to Islam to consider ourselves “reverts” holds a lot of truth to me – because submission to Allah (swt) is a sort of natural state, accepting Islam later in life is a return to something we’ve always known. I…

Since When is the Hijab a Pillar of Islam?

There is a serious obsession with the hijab in the Muslim community, and it needs to end. In one way or another, we have all witnessed or experienced the way a veiled woman is perceived verses her unveiled sister in Islam. Veiled: devout and respectable, Unveiled: disconnected from God, and leas knowledgeable about Islam. Veiled:…
