Letters From Daughters to Mothers: Words We Can’t Say Aloud

Dear Mom,

You and I are very close, but we’ve ways had different views on certain things. I know how important it is to you to dress up for any and all occasions. I’m the complete opposite. I’ve never cared much for fashion and what people think of the way I dress, so I tend to wear casual clothes.

You didn’t understand my wardrobe choices and so you called me a freak.

I don’t really understand why this disappoints you so much. Remember the time we got into a huge argument about my clothes? You told me I wore too many dark colors, that you didn’t approve of my T-shirts and jeans — which are what I feel most comfortable wearing. You didn’t understand my wardrobe choices and so you called me a freak.

It shocked me to hear you say that, and it made me wish I could be the kind of daughter who wanted to be more like you. But you have to know that I’m not. I’m not like you, at least not when it comes to the way we dress. I hope you realize that it’s okay for me to have my own style, to like things that you don’t like. I hope you know that being different is a far cry from being a freak.
