Amal Clooney Is Taking Daesh to Court

Amal Clooney is a Lebanese-British lawyer and activist whose main focus is international law and human rights issues.
Recently, on Sept. 19, it was announced that Clooney will be taking Daesh to court. Nadia Murad, Clooney’s client, was named U.N. Goodwill ambassador on Friday and Clooney and Murad are both hoping that, “…one woman’s story will help bring justice to genocide victims.”
Can we just discuss the bravery and power that both Clooney and Murad are by taking on possibly the most dangerous terrorist organization in the world?
What is the most baffling is the lack of action from the international community. One woman is taking it upon herself to bring about justice to victims of Daesh and be the voice of Yazidis who do not have a voice of their own. As Clooney said: “…the international community should be ashamed that they haven’t done more for the Yazidis.”

Can we just discuss the bravery and power that both Clooney and Murad are by taking on possibly the most dangerous terrorist organization in the world?

The mere fact that Clooney is stepping up and doing what our powerful world leaders are choosing not to do, is inspiring and disheartening at the same time.
If we look at cases such as the Holocaust and Rwanda, we can easily see that when the international community chooses to turn a blind eye, it makes matters worse for the victims. By the end of the Holocaust, between five to six million Jews were viciously murdered because the international community deemed it unnecessary to intervene.
Over the course of 100 days, 800,000 Rwandan citizens-majority Tutsi-were brutally murdered. Former U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali said the following in the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide: “The failure of Rwanda is 10 times greater than the failure of Yugoslavia. Because in Yugoslavia the international community was interested, was involved. In Rwanda nobody was interested.”
Every actor in the international community has a duty to one another, especially in the case of humanitarian crisis. In cases of genocide, it is important that the international community does not turn a blind eye.

The mere fact that Clooney is stepping up and doing what our powerful world leaders are choosing not to do, is inspiring and disheartening at the same time.

Amal Clooney is displaying an immense amount of courage, but as she said, “I don’t think anyone can feel that they’re being courageous compared to what Nadia’s doing and what all the women who’ve suffered what Nadia’s suffered are doing.”
So, kudos to Amal and Nadia for putting stepping up to the plate and putting their lives at risk to bring justice, to give a voice, and being a ray of hope and a silver lining for the thousands of Yazidi victims:
“Yes, I put my own life at risk but I don’t have a life without giving hope to other victims.”Nadia Murad
