On the first day of 2026, Zohran Mamdani made history as the city’s first Muslim mayor. For weeks after he won the election, he committed to visiting different mosques across New York City every Friday.
This time was different. Muslim Girl accompanied Zohran as he went where no male politician has gone before: the women’s section.
In a moment that felt both historic and overdue, he addressed the Muslim women of Masjid An-Noor in Staten Island directly — elders, organizers, and mothers who form the backbone of our communities. More than a symbolic stop, the visit underscored the intergenerational leadership of Muslim women and the importance of meeting them where they are: at the heart of faith, family, and civic life.
But it’s not just about the title. It’s about showing up for the community and proving that being a Muslim South Asian man doesn’t make you any less American, and that serving your city doesn’t make you any less human.
