20 Muslim Women to Watch in 2020

Layla Saad

— As told by Noha AlGahimi

Layla Saad is a globally known author and public speaker, who works tirelessly to challenge the presence of white supremacy. In fact, she is most well known for her book “Me and White Supremacy” which serves as a guide to white people for the unraveling of their own long-held beliefs.

Saad uses her own experiences a Black, Arab, East African, Muslim woman growing up in Western society to shed light on the steps society should take to achieve an unprecedented, and much needed, level of equality. In addition to her authorial endeavors, Saad runs a successful podcast where she discusses race, ethnicity, and womanhood with a variety of activists, speakers, and authors. Much like her written works, her podcast, “Good Ancestor,” focuses on the unraveling of white supremacy in an effort to maintain the honor of generations past and bring forth the voices of the systemically marginalized.

In being willing to focus on the readily ignored realities of Black, Muslim women (and other marginalized identities), Saad has paved the path to empowerment for those who actively engage in her books, speeches, and podcasts but also those who find themselves in a slightly more tolerant world.

Saad works tirelessly to relay her own message while simultaneously creating a platform for others to do the same. As her website states, Saad is committed to spreading inspiration, education, and activation to drive the world towards change.

She lives in service of a flawed social standard, which she has successfully sought to alter. In being willing to focus on the readily ignored realities of Black, Muslim women (and other marginalized identities), Saad has paved the path to empowerment for those who actively engage in her books, speeches, and podcasts but also those who find themselves in a slightly more tolerant world.

Layla Saad is an unstoppable agent of change. She represents the resilience, strength, and willpower of Muslim women globally, and does an incredibly elegant job maintaining these virtues in all of the content she produces.
