Gratitude and giving thanks to Allah SWT is the essence of Islam. It is the key to success and abundance in this Dunya and being grateful to Allah SWT is something we should be doing every single day. It’s an act of worship, a way to get closer to Allah SWT, and a way to gain his favour. Even if we’re suffering, and things aren’t going our way, we should still be happy with what we’re given. We should always be seeking the pleasure of Allah, no matter what circumstances we are in. It’s a form of worship that is highly regarded. Being grateful and thankful automatically becomes a way of seeking pleasure from Allah and we are abundantly rewarded.

But how do we express our gratitude? You can express your gratitude in many different ways. We have listed a few common ways below:

  • Start by saying ‘Alhamdulillah’ ‘Praise be to Allah’ as often as we can. The Prophet Muhammad SAWS said “Allah is pleased with His servant if when he eats something he thanks Allah for it, and when he drinks something he thanks Allah for it.” (Muslim) This hadith shows us that by being thankful for even the smallest of things, Allah SWT will be pleased with us.
  • We can also be thankful and show our gratitude by being patient during difficult times. Every human goes through difficulty and tests and when we do, we must remember to be thankful for everything Allah SWT has given us. Whether we lose a job or get injured or are experiencing grief after the loss of a loved one, turning to Allah and giving thanks and staying patient is a form of worship that is highly regarded.
  • Another way to show gratitude is by always remembering that there is someone out there who is experiencing something ten times worse than what we are. Instead of comparing ourselves with those that have more than us, we should always give thanks to Allah SWT for giving us what we already have. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said “Look at those who have less than you and never look at those who have more than you, this will ensure that you will not depreciate Allah’s favors.” (Muslim)
