I Wore a Different Hijab Style to Work Every Day For a Week and Here’s What Happened

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with fashion, and under that comes trying new hijab styles. I used to be afraid of changing up my look, because I never knew if the variety of styles I’d see would suit me or not, but this year, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone to explore different branches of fashion!

So, in that vein, every day for a week, I challenged myself to wear a different hijab style. Then, I rated how I liked the look on me, and people’s reactions to it. Most of these looks were taken from Instagram, so be sure to check them out and perhaps try some out for yourself!

1. The Pirate Look

I saw Maria Alia’s Instagram post wearing this hijab style and immediately fell in love. In the comments, I saw that all she did was tie a square scarf behind her head. It seemed super simple! I’ve seen women wear square hijabs before, but never in this style so I was super excited to see how it would look on me. Alas, the next day I went out and bought two square hijabs to try out.

It took a bit of practice getting used to how it fitted on my head, and how to tie it right to prevent the scarf from slipping, but I think I did quite well for my first time! This style was definitely the most popular one in terms of the number of times I got asked, “How did you do your hijab?” Then again, I also got told that I looked like a pirate with it on, hence the name! Overall, this look scores a solid 9 out of 10 from me.

2. Behind-the-Ears Look

I have no idea what this look is even called, but I always saw Dina on Instagram wearing pulling it off, and loved how chic it looked. I saw a tutorial posted on Instagram so I just had to try it out! Overall, I’d say this style of hijab definitely works best with thicker, fuller materials rather than thin or jersey hijabs. With thinner hijabs, it’s tough to get the right volume, and the style tends to fall flat.

Otherwise, this style was super easy to wear, and I repeated the style a lot when I went away on a field trip to ensure my hijab was off my face and securely in place the entire time. Overall, this one scored a 6 out of 10 from me.

3. The Side Pony

This is one of the cutest hijab styles I’ve seen by far, and the best part? It’s deceptively easy to style! You can pull it off with just about any outfit, and lucky for you, I found a 60-second tutorial that could not make it any easier. I wouldn’t wear it with silk or chiffon however, as it may slip around too much and ruin the look. If you’re feeling adventurous, try spicing up the look by adding a cute flower by your ear! This one’s a solid 8 out of 10 for me, ladies.

4. The Classic Turban

Ah, the classic turban. This is one style I’m always unsure about because I can never tell whether it suits my face shape or not. When trying out this style, I tried to make sure that the material was evenly spread around my head so that the hijab didn’t look like it was all clumped up in one area, and it wasn’t too hard to accomplish (especially with the masses of tutorials available on YouTube)! If you’re really into updating this stylish hijab look with the latest trends du jour, add in some sparkly clips to give your hijab that extra pop of glam. Overall, I’d say this look was a 7 out of 10 for me.

5. The I-Woke-Up-Like-This Look

During exam season, this was my go-to hijab. Well, any day where I’m in a rush, or really don’t have the energy for something fancy, I throw this look on. From experience, it always looks good, and can work well with any outfit. If you just want something simple, then I’d opt for jersey as a material, but if you’re feeling like looking a little more classy, chiffon does the trick (however due to the properties of the material, you might have to re-adjust it a couple times during the day). A solid 8 out of 10 from me!
