7 Surahs All Muslims Should Memorize

The Quran has been sent to mankind as a form of guidance. It’s a mercy and blessing, and we’ve been told to read it correctly and constantly. It’s unfortunate to think that we as an Ummah have drifted away from the Holy and most blessed book of Allah; technology and worldly things have all taken over our lives, and some of us hardly make time to read it.

Each Surah or chapter in the Quraan is important in different ways; however, there are a few Surahs that have extra blessings and benefits. The following Surahs are quite important for us to try to memorize because each one holds a unique significance.

Surah Kahf

Surah Kahf is a Surah that should be read every Friday morning before Jummah Salah. It is recommended to memorize the first 10 ayahs for protection against the Dajjal (false messiah). It is also a protection from fitnah and a source of forgiveness. When recited, the Nur (Light) of Allah will shine from that person.

 Surah Yaseen

This Surah is the heart of the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad SAWS used to say that the person who recites Surah Yaseen every day will be rewarded by Allah as though he or she has read the entire Quran ten times. The Prophet also said that he would love the person who read the heart of the Quran and keep it in their own hearts. It is recommended for us to recite it every morning after Fajr.

Surah Waqiah

Surah Waqiah is more popularly known as the Surah of Wealth. The Prophet Muhammad SAWS used to say that whoever recites this surah every night, he will never have poverty befall him. The Prophet also recommended us read it ourselves and teach it to our children. It is a Surah that reduces distress and brings many worldly benefits regarding our financial situations.

 Surah Mulk

Surah Mulk is a surah of only 30 verses and it is the Surah, according to the Prophet, that will intercede for us on the day of Judgment and plead with Allah on our behalf. It is also a surah of forgiveness, and while there is no limit to reading this surah in one day, it is recommended to read it right before sleeping.

“Abu Hurairah reports about Messenger of Allah PBUH, I heard the Holy Prophet PBUH saying: There is a Surah in the Quran which contains thirty ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven.” (Al- Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud).

Surah Ikhlas-Falaq-Naas

These three Surahs are better known as the three Quls. They are the Surahs that will protect us against any form of evil. This is why the Prophet would read these Surahs every night and day. Reciting Surah Ikhlas is the equivalent of reciting one-third of the entire Quraan.

“Whenever the Prophet went to bed, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq, and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that three times.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).
