The Women’s March Panel Coverage Had Only One Woman

This past Saturday was the date of an historic event. I’m not talking about the fact that America now has a new President — rather, the sheer power and solidarity that took place through the Women’s March on Washington and beyond. Women’s marches took place all over the world as people united to rally against Trump.

News outlets buzzed about the inspirational signs:

Celebrities that came out to march:

Ian McKellan

And the overall fact is, this was the largest political protest in American history!

Although the overwhelming number of men on this panel may not have been intentional, if it isn’t an important indicator of the importance of women’s rights, then I don’t what is.

However, despite this shining moment for women’s rights, we are brought right back to the reality of the world today.

What remains extremely ironic in light of the march is the CNN panel that covered it that night. At 10 o’clock, CNN host Don Lemon hosted a panel including eight men and only ONE woman. When the panel started discussing the Women’s March, Kirsten Powers from CNN was recognized to speak.

This decision was just:

Although the overwhelming number of men on this panel may not have been intentional, if it isn’t an important indicator of the importance of women’s rights, then I don’t what is. It is a reflection of just what the march was trying to rally against.

In the end, there needs to be increased diversity of women in politics, but also in media. Let’s hope that the next time the media decides to cover a historic women’s event, there are more female voices in the discussion.
