Watch: Why Our Children Need Role Models That Look Like Them

Today, Sunday, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. In honor of International Women’s Day, we thought we’d share one of our favorite TED Talks led by a woman. In this TED Talk, Patty Rodriguez talks about why it’s important for our children to see role models that look like them.

While some may scoff at this notion, many marginalized demographics are underrepresented across a variety of fields, including media. A study done by professors at UCLA revealed that only 28.7% of women in film have speaking roles, while overall, only 28.3% of minorities had speaking roles across various media overall. Another study, also carried out by UCLA, found that just a small percent of people with disabilities had speaking roles in film, and by small percent, we mean a mere 2.4%, which is simply unacceptable.

Representation matters.
