Watch These Muslim Latinas Speak out Against Stereotypes

All minorities in America know what it’s like to be stereotyped. Whether it’s due to their race, religion, or something else, anyone who is “different” gets categorized in certain negative ways, and even mistreated at times. Unfortunately, people who fall under multiple minority groups have to deal with this prejudice even more.

[These women] also break stereotypes by clarifying that they are not oppressed or brainwashed, and share how proud they are of their faith.

Four Muslim Latinas from New York City (Mariana Aguilera, Shailie Nieves, Zainab Ismail, and Aamilah Vilchez) share their stories and experiences in the video above.

They talk about how they are targeted by Islamophobes who assume that they are Arabs or South Asians. They also break stereotypes by clarifying that they are not oppressed or brainwashed, and share how proud they are of their faith.

I commend these courageous women for speaking out and giving both Muslims and non-Muslims some insight into what it is like to be both Latina and Muslim in 2017.
