Honor killings, which are defined as killings “perceived by the perpetrator to be a way to restore honor to the family in the face of a perceived damage,” occur less than 30 times a year in the U.S.
The statement is part of a broader section that pledges the U.S. government will begin releasing data on terrorism-related offenses committed by immigrants, Politico reports.

Despite honor killings being associated with Islam, they are believed to be rare in the United States. Scholars of Islam say there’s no religious justification for honor killings, and that the roots of the crime are often more about cultural traditions than anything else.
Although the provision is being used to track violence against women by Muslim men, Trump’s administration has planned to eliminate 25 “violence against women” grant programs as way to cut spending, despite 1500 women being killed as a result of domestic violence each year.
