The Girl’s Room Recap: 9 Lessons We Learned From #SOTMU

5. On media attention surrounding crimes that afflict the Muslim community:

Margari: We need to create our own media. I mean, really. If you look at what the media is right now, at what the news is doing… it’s entertainment. We have to really re-envision what the media is, how information is being disseminated. It’s very frightening what’s going on… The framworks in media is really problematic.

So, the solution I see is that we have to create our own media, and we need to speak to power… If I had learned about Ferguson from the media, it would have been a different story, but I learned about it from social media… but what can we expect for someone like Don Lemmon.

Zahra: In addition to creating our own media, we need to be in those newsrooms, making those decisions… I think we have to continue to engage, and do it on multiple levels… because, as much as I hate Fox News, they are the nation’s largest news network, people actually watch them, And so if we’re not accounting for that, then we’re missing out on millions or millions of viewers.

Abed: Take a look at today. Each news cast today led off with 2-3 minutes of two llamas running loose in Arizona. That was the top story… A top story like Chapel Hill just doesn’t fit the narrative of what these news channels want to post.

Malik: We are in the middle of the latest revolution that will take place, and that’s the technology revolution, where our entire world is opening up to new information and new vehicles to bring that information over… We are creating our own voices.
