Plymouth City’s Clerk Resigns After Making Islamophobic Post

You know what bigots do when they find themselves in a sticky situation at the workplace? Resign.

Remember when Rumana Ahmed explained to us how she lasted only eight days on the National Security Council during Trump’s administration? Looks like Plymouth City’s Clerk, Linda Langmesser, had an opinion about that.

Langmesser’s Facebook revealed a public anti-Muslim comment on a post about Rumana Ahmed. The post — which has since been taken down — stated, “Of course they [Muslims] don’t tell the whole truth, part of their culture. She is nothing but trouble and needs to be sent back so she can profess her love to the koran there where it is appreciated, not here!!”

“No public servant should be representing the interests of the people and overseeing elections while at the same time holding clearly bigoted views.”

The Arab-American Civil Rights League worked with organizations such as the American-Muslim and Minority Advocacy League as well as the general public to demand an investigation against Langmesser. “No public servant should be representing the interests of the people and overseeing elections while at the same time holding clearly bigoted views,” Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Michigan chapter, said. This public outcry initiated a scrutinized analysis of this case.

On Friday, Linda decided to resign (doesn’t that sound guilty to you?) from her 25-year track as a city clerk when an investigation was opened against her for this post. While she refuses to meet for interviews, a local TV station declared that Langmesser told them, by phone, that she denies making the post, claiming she was hacked.

The station, WXYZ, decided to investigate her page for any other signs or evidence of being hacked. She had not written any mentions about such acts against her profile account on her page. Rather, she had several other posts supporting President Donald Trump’s immigration stance.

While she refuses to meet for interviews, a local TV station declared that Langmesser told them, by phone, that she denies making the post, claiming she was hacked.

While an internal investigation is ongoing within Plymouth City about this incident, it is important for us to make a lesson from this. We will not allow prejudice in our work spaces. We will not make room for xenophobia in our lives.

It is vital we look at details of the whole incident because “of course, they [xenophobes] don’t tell the whole truth, part of their culture. She [Linda Langmesser] is nothing but trouble and needs to be sent back so she can profess her love to prejudice there where it is appreciated, not here!”
