“Your legacy will be every life you’ve touched.”
In this sound bite of an interview conducted a few weeks ago between Oprah and David Rubinstein for Bloomberg Television, the social activist and TV queen revealed the best piece of advice she had ever been given.
Her best words of wisdom came from her longtime friend and poet Maya Angelou: “Your legacy will be every life you’ve touched.”
And first off, that pair. Oprah and Maya. ICONIC. If that ain’t #slayage, then I don’t know what is.
If we can just reach one girl and make her feel a little more comfortable in her skin, a little more proud to be Muslim, then that will mean the world.
This video personally struck a chord with me because it aligns perfectly with Muslim Girl’s Mission. All the praise from the media deeming us the #1 Muslim read blog in America and the opportunities we have to amplify our voices like collaborating with Conde Nast Entertainment, MTV, and the White House, those are all amazing. Don’t get me wrong. And we are forever grateful for these partnerships.
But, this brand started out as a young teen in her bedroom just trying to show other Muslim girls that they are not alone. We all began to write because we wanted to be the big sisters many never had. To show others that Muslim Women are not some niche audience that could be ignored and that Islam is not a monolith.
And if we can just reach one girl and make her feel a little more comfortable in her skin, a little more proud to be Muslim, then that will mean the world. That is what we want our legacy to be.
That’s our goal. And that is something that will be forever cemented in our writing and our minds.
Attention and partnership is great and we need that now more than ever. Expansions our company will only do more and more good to the Muslim community. But we will never forget our roots. Thanks for reminding us all of that so eloquently, Oprah.
Peace.
