WTF: Newt Gingrich Wants to Surveil, Test, and Deport Muslims

Following yesterday’s terrorist attacks in Nice, France, Newt Gingrich appeared on Fox News with Sean Hannity, calling for more surveillance against American Muslims, and saying that any Muslim who believes in Sharia law should be required to leave the country, and deported.
“Western civilization is in a war. We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in Sharia, they should be deported. Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization,” he said.
He didn’t elaborate on how such “testing” would work, or where he would deport American born Muslims to.  Because yes, as crazy as it sounds, there are American Muslims living in America.  (Insert a shocked gasp here.)
Right now, I’m wondering if my freedom of speech is under attack, too — Like am I going to get deported for writing this?  I’ll keep you posted.

While the former House speaker and Georgia congressman said that Sharia is “incompatible” with Western civilization, it should be noted that America’s laws are the closest to true Sharia law, because of America’s focus on freedoms of speech, religion, and expression — the very same freedoms that are threatened by the anti-Muslim rhetoric of politicians like Donald Trump and Newt Gingrich.

Despite many Muslim-majority countries claiming to practice Sharia, there is not a single good example of a “Sharia compliant” Muslim-majority country in existence today.
Sharia law is not built on oppression, but on the notion of absolute justice.  Nor is Sharia law to be imposed on any non-Muslims.  It is a personal relationship with God.
The Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, demonstrated that the Sharia is to be imposed only willingly, and Sharia itself forbids that it be imposed on any unwilling person — it should never be enacted through forced government intervention.
So no, Muslims don’t want Sharia law to “rule America,” as so many would have you believe.  The Quran explicitly instructs that religion should not be a matter of the state, and instructs Muslims to adhere to the law of the land — so U.S. Muslims are required to adhere to the Constitution.  Yes, the very same Constitution that some of our politicians don’t want to adhere to.

Yes, the very same Constitution that some of our politicians don’t want to adhere to.

In the Charter of Medina, the Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, instructed that Muslims were to be held to Shariah Law, and Jews to the Law of the Torah.  There was not a single non-Muslim held to Sharia law, because Sharia law itself forbids compulsion in religion, and champions freedom of religion.  The Quran very clearly says, “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256).
The Quran actually goes so far as to oblige Muslims to defend their Christian and Jewish brothers and sisters, and protect their churches, synagogues and temples from attack to defend their freedoms of religions (22:41).

So what’s the problem if Muslims can’t practice Sharia law then, you ask.  If Sharia law were to be banned, or we were to be deported for practicing it, American Muslims wouldn’t be able to marry, divorce, write wills, or inherit according to Islamic values.  This is incredibly anti-American, as this would be a restriction of our right to privately practice our religion, which is a violation of the Constitution, and against the very notion that America was founded on — freedom of religion.
Because seriously, my marriage contract and my will are not a threat to national security, I promise.  The only person that should be worried is my future husband if he thinks he’s going to have four wives.  Which he can’t do anyway, because America.  The law of the land is one wife.  Sorry, habibi, and God bless America!  (P.S.:  If you’re a non-Muslim reading this, this is banter.  Islam encourages monogamy.)

Gingrich went on to propose increased surveillance of mosques, echoing Donald Trump, who previously called for the same, along with his infamous “Muslim ban.”
“I mean, if you’re not prepared to monitor the mosques, this whole thing is a joke,” Gingrich said.
Ironically, a recent study by the Research Institute for Social Policy and Understanding found that attending the masjid is linked to increased civic engagement — not increased extremism.

Historically, what we’ve seen with the majority of these surveillance programs is that they typically rely on illegal and unconstitutional methods, provocation, entrapment, and violating the civil rights of innocent Americans.  These operations tend to oppress innocent people far more than they catch the bad guys, whilst psychologically priming the public for violence against a target population, and normalizing it.
He also called for increased Internet monitoring, saying that it should be a felony punishable by jail time for anyone to visit a website that favored Daesh or al-Qaeda.
“Our forces should be used to systematically destroy every internet-based source.  And frankly, if we can’t destroy them through the internet, we should destroy them with kinetic power, using various weapons starting with Predators and just — frankly, just killing them,” Gingrich told Hannity.
If you’re unfamiliar with some of the terminology he used, a Predator is a type of drone.
Religious profiling and extrajudicial killings aren’t premises of American justice either — that’s a threat to Western civilization, too — but we’ll save that for another day.
Personally, I vote that we deport politicians who want to violate the Constitution, because those are the real anti-American Americans here.
