Meet the Owner of ModernEID & Learn the Latest Eid Decor Trends

In Muslim Girl’s Eid Care Package, subscribers received a ton of goodies from modernEID, including halal gummy bears, gold flash tattoos, cute stickers and an Eid print. I loved everything from modernEID so I decided to talk to the owner and designer, Jomana Siddiqui about her company. She’s a graphic designer and stationery designer based in Orange County, California.

Eid Al-Adha is actually coming soon, so don’t wait last minute and start preparing for it now! image3-2

MG: Why did you start this business?

At the time I was occasionally designing Eid products for many of my Muslim clients because there weren’t any real options out there of Ramadan/Eid decor with a modern aesthetic.

So many American Muslims are from such diverse cultures, so it seemed limiting that Muslim products should only cater to those of Middle Eastern backgrounds.

I didn’t think everything made for the Muslim consumer necessarily needed to have a palm tree/camel/gilding on it to be relevant. Moreover, so many American Muslims are from such diverse cultures, so it seemed limiting that Muslim products should only cater to those of Middle Eastern backgrounds. So I set out to make a product line that would not only offer modern design, but create new traditions for American Muslims.

MG: Growing up myself, there were barely any fun and cute Eid decor and ideas. Nowadays, there’s so many to choose from! What is unique about your brand?

Me too! We never had any decor or activities growing up for Eid. Even in 2011 when I started modernEID, there were very few options out there catering to these holidays. Since we started, I’ve seen such a massive growth of new product lines specific for Ramadan/Eid.

Eid Al-Adha often gets forgotten because there isn’t a lead up to it like Ramadan. But it can be made just as special by getting your home decorated early and building an appreciation for the holiday.

However, what is unique about our brand is that we come from a design angle. I create all of our products following current trends in design and keep changing it up to stay current. As an artist, I respect other people’s work and will always try to keep our products different from what’s out there. Once we see one of our products or lines being replicated in the market, we’ll move on with a new design. So you can be sure that modernEID products will always be unique and fresh!

MG: Eid Al-Adha is actually coming up soon. What are some must have decor for Eid?

I’m big on products that can multi-task so I would definitely recommend having a banner and one of our centerpieces that say “Happy Eid” to start because they can be used twice year! Not to mention the centerpiece can double as a cake topper!

Eid Al-Adha often gets forgotten because there isn’t a lead up to it like Ramadan. But it can be made just as special by getting your home decorated early and building an appreciation for the holiday. Try creating favors using things like “Happy Eid” stickers and using a countdown poster to build anticipation.

MG: What are some popular and affordable items from Modern Eid?

Given the unicorn everything trend, our new rainbow foil line is quite popular now. Most of our items are quite affordable actually things like our gold tattoos, metallic foil stickers, gift tags and wrapping paper all under $5. Our hands down all time most popular items have always been our Happy Eid Money Envelopes (for “eidee”) and paper lanterns.

MG: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A big part of what sets our brand apart is also our mission. The first part being to bring Eid to the masses, and a greater understanding about what the holiday is in the American market. I’ve worked hard to get Eid recognized by retailers and had the pleasure of bringing multiple Eid events and decor to Macy’s and now Saks Fifth Avenue. We were successful in bringing Eid products to a major American retailer like Jet.com & now Walmart.com. ModernEID’s end goal isn’t just to sell a product, but rather share our celebrations with others and in that hope, bridge the gaps that may divide us.

Finally, also for us first and second generation American Muslims. While we may have a storied ethnic background, our nationality is American and we’re proud of that! We have our own culture and I wanted modernEID products to reflect that, and be a tool for those who are creating new Eid and Ramadan traditions for ourselves and generations to come.
