Meet the ‘Bombhijabis’ That Have Taken Over Snapchat

Bombhijabis is a platform that started out as a Tumblr blog and transitioned its way onto Snapchat. Its amazing growth has evolved into a platform for Muslim females around the world to connect and meet new friends.
How does it work? Every day, Bombhijabis features a new girl from a different part of the world. You never know who will be featured or where they are from on that day.

One day you may meet a person connecting to her Zen lifestyle in Maldives, the next you may get to know a hipster sporting her styles in New York City.
I love this cyber community because it’s helped many Muslim girls come together and find comfort in one another — myself included. The Bombhijabis revolution has inspired me to make new friends and actually connect with others featured on the site.
We watch as our Muslim girlfriends show their day-to-day lives, give us tours around their city and answer questions from followers, encouraging us all to be active and engaging.

Having said that, you can see why I was so excited to be given the opportunity to interview the creators of Bombhijabis. As much as I loved them and what they do, I wanted to make sure to give you the opportunity to get to know about Bombhijabis as well, and how their empowering movement is taking over Snapchat one feature at a time.

Muslim GirlWhat inspired you to start Bombhijabis?
BombHijabis: We first started Bombhijabis as a blog on Tumblr. It was created in order to show everyone that Muslim women are not oppressed because of the hijab.
We are able to be successful, fashionable, outgoing and, at the same time, be modest. We also wanted to show everyone the daily life of a hijabi from anywhere in the world.
Is the outcome what you expected?
The outcome is what we hoped for, alhamdulilah. We have so many followers tuning into Snapchat. Insha’Allah, we will continue doing so.
What do you think has been the best thing that came from the creation of Bombhijabis?
One of the best things that came from the Bombhijabis phenomenon is the Snapchat account and the community we built from within. There have been many girls who have become friends with one another from different parts of the world because of it, so that in itself is very rewarding.
Also, we have had many reverts who’ve been featured who initially didn’t have a lot of Muslim women as friends. So, Bombhijabis Snapchat is a nice platform where reverts have made many supporting new friendships.
What do you think attracts people to engage with others on Bombhijabis?
I think one of the things that attracts people to engage with us is the inspiration they might get from seeing another hijabi featured on our account. They might be a little shy, but then they see someone else featured they can relate to and then get the courage to be active as well.
Also, I think a lot of girls want to share a bit of their life to a halal audience that is very welcoming.  One of the things that attract people is that we have a different girl from a different place featured every day — so every time you tune in, you experience something new.

Did you have any doubts or fears or anticipation when starting the account?
When you start anything, there is always this fear that it’s going to fail.  Another fear is the unwarranted attention from male viewers.
When we add people it’s so hard to filter out who is a male or who is female because sometimes the Snapchat names don’t indicate gender. We try our hardest to go through and delete any of the Snapchatters who we find to be men.
Our most important concern is that our community feels safe and comfortable.
What is your ultimate goal for Bombhijabis?
Our ultimate goal is to build a large community of Muslim women who feel safe to interact with one another.
We want to inspire girls who are afraid or aren’t sure about wearing the hijab; that there is a community out there who will support you wholeheartedly if you choose to start wearing it one day.
There seems to be an air of anonymity to the Bombhijabis crew. Your audience has never seen the admin(s). Is there a chance that you’ll ever be featured?
Who says we haven’t? mgheart
