Mean Tweets Read out Loud: Muslim Version

We are living in a time where the entire world is watching us to see how we will react to Islamophobia. News flash, haters, you can’t phase us.

True Islam, an organization aimed towards educating non-Muslims on Islam, took an initiative to show the world how much hate Islam gets on social media platforms such as Twitter. In their YouTube video, True Islam had non-Muslims read out loud actual tweets tweeted to Muslims in front of Muslims. Even then, one of the individuals in the video was actually a Sikh. This is meant to emphasize the importance of how hate is spread through profiling. Just as this individual was targeted for “looking”  like a Muslim, Islam itself gets blamed for extremists that don’t follow our religion.

This video represents our resilience. This video illuminates our humor in the face of marginalization. When a hateful tweet was shared out loud in the video, it wasn’t a Muslim who cried. This notion in itself illustrates how much we are used to Islamophobia as an Ummah. And while it is not fair for us to normalize these attacks on our religion, it is important we understand that our love for peace and unity far surpasses their hate speech. As seen in this video, we combat uncomfortable and hurtful situations with humor and empathy.

While we continue to succeed in our own lives despite the hardship Islamophobes throw in our way, it is essential we find allies in other communities. This video is not only meant to be watched but also shared for allyship.
