The mayor of Charleston, S.C., Mayor John Tecklenburg and his wife Sandy Tecklenburg recently announced Aug. 23 as Reshma Khan Day. Dr. Reshma Khan, a gynecologist and founder of The Shifa Clinic, dedicates her time serving women who are in need of health care but cannot afford it.
Khan was also recently awarded a Leadership in Diversity Award.
Dr. Khan not only volunteers her free services in the medical field but also collaborates with local organizations to distribute food to people in need and backpacks to children going to school from low-income areas.
Dr. Khan said on The Shifa Clinic’s Facebook page:
“None of us would be who we are today if we traveled alone,” she wrote. “So many people have inspired me along the way, joining me in supporting and building the vision for [a] healthy community.”
The Shifa Clinic is a non-profit and tax-exempt clinic and is also funded by The Islamic Circle of North America Relief USA (ICNA Relief USA).
“I share this award with my family, parents, mentors, friends and especially with my exceptional staff who work by my side every day along with generous donors and volunteers who give so kindly of their time and talent and resources to the community in so many ways. You are the real ‘leaders in diversity.’ You are our community fabric. I will forever cherish this recognition and this very special moment.”
