Ever since posting a live video of my Brazilian wax experience on Facebook, I’ve become the “Cooter” correspondent for Muslim Girl. I’ve gotten a Brazilian wax three times now, and I was under the assumption that it was not only for the baby-smooth aesthetic, but for hygienic purposes as well. So, I took a deeper look. I’ve done extensive research (when I say “extensive,” I basically mean a quick Google search and read three articles) on the health benefits of keeping the “region” bare or blanketed with hair. Here are my findings:
1. Islamically, You Gotta Trim that Bad Boy Every 40 days.
Muslims all around the world understand that cleanliness is serious in Islam. You know it’s real when you’ve got to make wudhu just to make prayer five times a day. It wasn’t hard to find a few sources that confirmed keeping down there trimmed for men and woman. Ibn Muflih said in Al-Aadaab Ashshar’iyyah (the religious etiquettes), “It is disliked to delay shaving of the pubic hairs…”
2. Is a Shaved Region Healthier?
Most scientific studies point to no, but there were a few sources that claim that we may not know it, but our crotches sweat and hold on to a lot of dirt and grime. And that these things cling to the hair which can cause bacteria to grow. Hmm, something to consider…
3. It’s Culturally Acceptable
Ohmigod. *Extreme feminist eye roll* As we all know, it’s culturally acceptable for a woman to be “hairless.” Especially in America. We have this weird obsession with hair removal. But it’s not the same for men. Uh-huh. Moving on.
4. Removing Hair From the Nether-Region Has Its Cons
There are four main ways to remove hair: Razors, depilatory creams, wax and laser hair removal. With every method, you are at risk for redness, irritation, discoloration, bleeding, soreness, and/or infection.
And let’s not even get started on shaving, which is the most common use amongst us ladies. The grow back itch is oh-so-real.
5. Scientifically Speaking
It’s actually better to keep some hair down there. Why? Because the hair causes less friction against the skin during intercourse and undie rubbing which means less redness and irritation. Also, the hair acts as a barrier against certain bacteria that can get too close to the skin.
6. A Pair of Undies Feels Very Nice
Not even gonna lie, after the Brazilian, you feel all light and airy. Like some kind of fairy tossing glittery fairy dust. Throw on a pair of nice silk undies. *sighs*
So, the verdict: it’s your preference. Whether you go full Bruce Willis bald or bushy tailed and bright eyed, it’s your choice and no one should judge your hair or lack of either way.
Let’s keep the conversation going: what’s your method or non-method of hair removal?
the question is, why would your all-knowing, all powerful god put hair there if it is bad?
