By On the 4th of August, 2019, Kashmir went dark. The already heavily-militarized region was over-run with troops from the Indian Army, as the Indian government scrapped Article 370, a part of the Indian constitution that allowed the region of Jammu and Kashmir (a historically disputed area between India and Pakistan) to have a separate constitution, a separate flag, and self-autonomy over the internal administration of their state.
As Kashmiris anticipated the death of their democracy at the hands of the Indian government, they were met with a total internet blackout by India’s current extremist government. Here, we follow tweets by Kashmiri journalist Mirza Waheed, Kashmiri poet Sanna Wani, and a few others, to highlight the current plight of the Kashmiri people and the implications of what has transpired over the last few days for the people of Kashmir:
