Ilhan Omar Wins Minnesota Congressional Primary

Ilhan Omar has won her Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th district with 57% of the vote.

After Rep. Omar’s high profile first term in Congress, she faced challenger Antone Melton Meaux in the Democratic primary. Melton Meaux, who is a first time political candidate, ran as a candidate “focused on the fifth,” and has called Omar “out of touch with the district” and “focused on her own personal pursuits and celebrity to the detriment of the work that needs to be done.”

Both campaigns raised just over 4 million dollars, 4.3 and 4.1 for Rep. Omar and Melton Meaux respectively.

Rep. Omar made history in 2018 by becoming one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress. In addition, Rep .Omar is the first Somali-American woman to serve in Congress.
