Fatima Mohammed has been trending globally for all the right reasons. She spoke against the Israeli-military regime that continues to murder Palestinian people and termed the NYPD to be fascist in the way they operate. Truth be told, she was right.
It comes as no surprise that media outlets are tarnishing and harassing Mohammed for her commencement speech. When has the global media ever appreciated advocates speaking for the rights of the Palestinian people?
Not too long ago, Nerdeen Kiswani a graduate of CUNY School of Law also gave a commencement speech advocating for the human rights of Palestinians. She spoke of the terror she endured at the hands of anti-Palestinian groups on campus.
We see a pattern here. CUNY School of Law has a history of failing its students who stand for social justice. Pro-Palestinian speech has never been welcomed at CUNY and we see this through the experiences of Mohammed and Kiswani as students at the University.
By exercising their right to free speech, they made it a priority to let the world know that silence is not an option in the face of injustice.
Mohammed and Kiswani used their graduation as platforms to shed light on a marginalized group of people facing oppression. By exercising their right to free speech, they made it a priority to let the world know that silence is not an option in the face of injustice. Yet, their arguments were deemed anti-semitic. Clearly, politicians and organizations are using this to conceal the terrorism being practiced toward Palestinians.
#WeStandWithFatima and anyone else who uses their voices to stand for the liberation of the Palestinian people.
