Canada Just Hired its First Headscarf-Clad Muslim News Anchor

Just last week, a bill was proposed to ban the niqab in Georgia. Meanwhile, a Muslim woman in hijab sat as a news anchor in Canada.

Ginella Massa is the first hijab-wearing anchor in the country and currently works at Toronto’s CityNews station as a television news reporter.

She posted the video of her anchoring on her Facebook page on Nov. 18., captioned:

That’s a wrap! Thankful to have opportunities like this at a time when there is so much hate and vilifying of Muslims. Looking forward to the day when it’s no longer a big deal for someone who looks like me to be anchoring a newscast ✌?️

Massa has been a journalist since 2010 and an on-air reporter since January 2015. She frequently writes about the state of Muslims in North America.

“It’s pretty exciting to be recognized as the first,” Massa told Yahoo Style. “But it’s also unfortunate that it has taken this long in a country as diverse as Canada.”

Massa has been receiving heaps of feedback and thanked her Twitter followers:

Massa is a talented journalist and has worked at several news outlets  including CityNews, CTV, NEWSTALK 1010 and Rogers Television.

We love that she is a hard-working and talented journalist who overcame the challenges that come with the hijab. Keep up the great work!
