I Am Not Your Black Friend, nor Your Prop

I am not your Black friend, nor am I your prop

I am not your sidekick

Who don’t matter and sits in the backdrop

And you hang with your clique

Do I matter to you?

Then don’t push me to the side

I have some problems too

You should never let that slide

I’m a Black girl and I don’t play

If you were a real friend you’d face this

I am not your excuse to say

“I have a Black friend, I’m not racist!”

Until your ignorance comes to a stop

I am not your Black friend, nor am I your prop.

Author’s note: This was inspired by a British Vogue headline and a real-life experience of being the only Black friend in a group. No one deserves to feel isolated in a group of friends.
