Aware that many weren't familiar with her cultural background, she wrote a pre-emptive strike to would-be trolls in the caption: "& before you go all 'cultural appropriation' in my comments, check out the last name. Hadid. Half Palestinian & proud of it." This outright declaration of pride grabbed headlines, with many news outlets reporting on the post.
