It’s Super Tuesday — meaning for the states that qualify, voting is well underway. If you’re on the lookout for info on the right leader, you know there’s been a frenzy of political coverage from mainstream news to social media. But nothing quite gets down and dirty like comedians that cover 22-minute episodes on the candidates involved.
Sunday’s show of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” finally decided to concede and cover an episode on Donald Trump. But this is no ordinary take-down. Oliver slams Trump by directly targeting the traits his supporters claim he possesses. From tackling his nonexistent stance on the issues, to calling him “a litigious serial liar with a string of broken business ventures and the support of a former Klan leader,” to assessing why his name is equated with success — Oliver spares no expense.
For his usual low-key episodes, in which he claims the guests are usually limited to sloths and puppies, this particular one seems to have gone viral within the timeframe of a day. And for good reason. The entire episode, from start to finish, delivers one the most ruthless slams on television right now.
The cherry on top? Oliver goes so far as to attempt to rebrand Trump’s name. He says that according to a biographer, the family name Trump was actually changed from none other than “Drumpf,” which can easily be used to remove the widely held association of his name with success — and replace it with a sound “produced when a morbidly obese pigeon flies into the window of a foreclosed Old Navy.”
He purchased the website donaldjdrumpf.com, through which he urges viewers to download a chrome extension to change Trump’s last name anywhere it appears on a website to “Drumpf.” Oliver also is selling hats — at cost — with the modified slogan of the original campaign to, “Make Donald Drumpf Again.”
To also make it a viral phenomenon, the hashtag #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain is encouraged to be spread on social media. And it’s worked thus far. The video not only reached 1 million views within 12 hours, but is now at a staggering 8 million views and counting.
If even all that isn’t enough to convince you to keep going to the end, let’s just say it ends with a bang.
