When a man can be elected as the President of the United States, despite mocking a reporter with a disability, openly bragging about sexually assaulting women, and pretty much insulting 289 other people places and things — what comes next shouldn’t surprise us.
White Supremacy has been given a platform (the White House), the KKK are coming out of their shadows with a fresh coat of paint, as they have come out as the new “Alt-Right” movement. Expectedly, capitalism is here to monetize on this hate.
So, it should not come as a surprise that Milo Yiannopoulos, a gay “alt-right” outspoken writer and editor for Breitbart news, has just landed a $250,000 book deal. You may remember him from his permanent ban from Twitter — where he harassed “Ghostbusters” star Leslie Jones relentlessly.
According to the LA Times, Yiannopoulos is currently on his tour, “Dangerous Faggot,” where he recently visited the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. There, he called out a transgender student, misgendered and insulted her, saying she “failed” at transitioning.
Basically, this guy is scum. Yet, Threshold Editions, an imprint of the publishing company Simon & Schuster, will be publishing his book, “Dangerous.” It’ll be coming out in March 2017. According to LA Times, the publishers stated in their press release, “‘Dangerous’ will be a book on free speech by the outspoken and controversial gay British writer and editor at Breitbart News who describes himself as ‘the most fabulous supervillain on the internet.'” Threshold Editions is also the publisher for Donald Trump’s “Great Again” and conservatives Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.
Freedom of speech is a necessary right. Often, this freedom is used as a shield for negativity and hate, but it is more than that.
Similarly, Lauren Southern, an anti-feminist libertarian, has published a book recently called “Barbarians: How Baby Boomers, Immigrants and Islam Screwed my Generation.” Plenty of books have come out against Islam — for example, by the ever persistent Ayan Hisri, starting with the infamous “Infidel,” and her latest in 2015: “Heretic: Why Islam Needs Reform.” Addressing them may seem like we are drawing attention to it, but we have to realize what type of animosity is being spewed as the truth. We must use our voice to counter it.
Freedom of speech is a necessary right. Often, this freedom is used as a shield for negativity and hate, but it is more than that. Knowing that hate and controversy sell, mainstream media continues to raise the voices advocating for that hate even higher. That is why we must use our voices together to raise tolerance and respect.
