Disney+ Is Making a Short About a Pakistani Family Celebrating Eid

Disney+ recently declared that they are working on a short in which the characters will be celebrating Eid! So far, the only thing we know for certain is that they want actors who speak Urdu and English. Casting will occur in Los Angeles. Although it will be great to see this on a platform such as Disney+, I was hoping for a more diverse cast since Muslims come from various backgrounds, but that was just something I was thinking about when I first heard the news.

According this  Mashable article, the premise of the story will center around Ameena and Zahra, who are of Pakistani origin. Ameena is an 8-year-old who finds out that Eid isn’t celebrated as a holiday in the U.S. She decides to start a petition to make Eid a holiday. Meanwhile, her sister Zahra is just trying to fit in as a high schooler and wants to be more American. The two of them have a falling out over the petition.

I’m tired of seeing characters who are not proud of who they are, and would love to see more characters that are proud of their religion.

I think this will be good for younger viewers to see themselves represented on both sides of the specturm, and I hope Zahra eventually learns to appreciate her religion and her culture by the end of the short. I’m tired of seeing characters who are not proud of who they are, and would love to see more characters that are proud of their religion. I’m sure there are people who are not proud of who they are, but there’s already several shows that portray that, and I think it would be a nice change to see this kind of representation.

What are you hoping to see in this short? What are you hoping not to see? Who would be in your dream cast if you were given the opportunity to pick?
