By Earlier this week, Hanna Yusuf, a young and talented journalist, passed away unexpectedly.
In her 27 years of life, Hanna left behind a legacy of investigative journalism. Known for her work covering hard-hitting stories, Yusuf lead a life committed to truth seeking. Hanna’s investigative work has revealed stories of injustce that otherwise would have never been exposed.
In fact, a year ago Yusuf brought attention to gut-wrenching story of a mother of nine who escaped violence and instability in Somalia by moving to Leicester. The mother would go on to share with Yusuf the detailed horrors of life-altering hate crimes, ultimately leaving her and all nine children vulnerable to injustice. Hanna’s most recent work included an investigation into working conditions at Costa Coffee stores. Yusuf’s Costa Coffee investigation revealed gross malpractice by store mangers, propelling an independent audit of Costa Coffee shops. Without this journalist’s commitment and bravery, the world would have remained ignorant.
While we mourn her loss, we hope that Hanna’s legacy will serve as an inspiration and beacon to her fellow colleagues and to her community and her meaningful memory and the people she has touched for many years lives on.
Despite the loss of a powerful and talented journalist, Hanna Yusuf’s friends and family hope that her work continues to inspire young, fearless writers to embrace challenges and expose the truth. “While we mourn her loss, we hope that Hanna’s legacy will serve as an inspiration and beacon to her fellow colleagues and to her community and her meaningful memory and the people she has touched for many years lives on,” the family said in a statement.
Truly, there is something to be said about a woman who is well-versed in six languages, stunningly beautiful, and described by friends and colleagues as incredibly kind. Her legacy shall live on in all those whose lives she’s touched.
