This Is What the Prophet (PBUH) Said About the Eclipse

Yassir Qadhi narrates the story of Prophet Muhammad’s (p.b.u.h.) experience at the age of 61 during a total eclipse after the death of his son, Ibrahim. During this time of grief, the people thought the eclipse occurred because of the death Ibrahim. The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) directed his followers to pray.

According to ThoughtCo., “At a time of a solar or lunar eclipse, there is a recommended prayer (salatul-kusuf) that is performed by the Muslim community in congregation.”

The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said, “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death of someone from the people but they are two signs amongst the signs of Allah. When you see them, stand up and pray.”

The following is a guideline for your prayer:

  • Try to perform your eclipse prayer in a congregation.
  • The cycle of prayer is two rakats.
  • According to ThoughtCo., “each rakat of the eclipse prayer has two bowings and two prostrations (for a total of four).”

Please make sure you take proper precautions if you are viewing the eclipse by using the sunglasses make specifically for the event. Protect your eyes. If you plan on praying during the eclipse, follow the guidelines above. May all your prayers be accepted by Allah (SWT) during this total eclipse.
