5 Foods From the Quran That You Can Use in Your Beauty Routine

We all know that Ramadan is a time for spiritual reawakening, but that doesn’t mean that we should neglect our bodies and their needs. It’s possible for both your skin and spirit to glow this month — and what better way to maintain healthy, radiant skin (and hair) than by formulating a customized, organic beauty routine that incorporates foods mentioned in the Quran? The Quran is, after all, a book of guidance. Any foods and/or drinks that Allah (SWT) mentions in His Word will have an abundance of benefit to us, so it’s in our best interest to use and enjoy the blessings which Allah has bestowed upon us. Here are five foods/drinks you can start using in your beauty regimen:

1. Honey

There are countless reasons why honey is a great staple to have in your pantry, and not all of them include eating it! Known as nature’s medicine, honey has antibacterial properties and can help reduce acne scars. You can use it as a spot treatment for red or inflamed skin, or as a mask (mixed with lemon juice and yogurt) for brighter skin

And your Lord inspired to the bee, “Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct. Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you].” There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.” (16:68-69)

2. Olive (Oil)

Allah (SWT) talks about the olive numerous times in the Quran, both in this world and in Paradise; He (SWT) even swears by the fig and the olive in the 95th chapter of the Quran, which means that the trees bearing both of these fruits are a great blessing. Olive oil is a highly effective natural moisturizer; use it in the winter to keep your skin from drying out. Honestly, use it in the summer, too. Use it throughout the year! You can’t go wrong. It’s also a great hair conditioner and/or mask.

“And a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows oil, and (it is a) relish for the eaters.” (23:20)

3. Bananas

Apparently, the nutrients in banana peels can help fight acne. I’d rather rub a banana peel on my face than try a $100 mask that will end up giving me more acne, tbh. Check out this DIY acne treatment from HudaBeauty.

“Amid thornless lote-trees, and banana-trees (with fruits), one above another, and extended shade, and water flowing constantly, and abundant fruit, neither intercepted nor forbidden. (56:28-33)

4. Milk

There are many benefits to drinking milk, but did you know that you can also use it as a hair mask? Combine milk and honey and apply them to your hair for silky smooth strands.

“Surely there is a lesson for you in cattle. We give you to drink of what is in their bellies, between bowels and blood – pure milk – pleasant for those who drink it.” (16:66)

5. Water

Is there a greater blessing than rain? Without water, life on this planet would not be sustainable, and yet we waste it almost on a daily basis. While there are differing opinions on whether drinking more water will help you achieve healthier skin, your body definitely needs lots of water, especially during Ramadan. Drinking water helps us rid the body of toxins. That has to be great for our skin and hair, right?

“It is He Who sends down rainwater from the sky and therewith produces vegetation of all kinds: He brings forth green crops producing grain piled up in the ear, palm-trees laden with clusters of dates hanging within reach, gardens of grapes, olives, and pomegranates; though their fruit resembles in kind yet is different in variety. Look at their fruits as they yield and ripen. Behold! In these things there are signs for true believers.” (6:99)

As a challenge for the few days that are left in this holy month, try to find more foods/drinks that Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran, and come up with ways to incorporate them into your diet or daily routine.
