Who wronged you so badly for you to hate a complete stranger? If hatred comes from fear, who scared you to the point that you feel you have to defend yourself against everyone? Whom do you really fear? What is it about the freedom of others that makes you so uncomfortable? You use your religion and laws to justify oppressing those different from you. Have you stopped to consider you are violating the very religion and laws you are trying to support?
Every time you grumble about immigrants, know that you are grumbling about your very own heritage. Science has proven that the world’s population is the result of migration. The inhabitation of North America was the product of people searching for relief from oppression. How different would life be if the First Nation people had thrown your ancestors into the ocean and told them to go back where they came from? Perhaps that is what you fear…domination. You see history repeating itself and fear the influx of immigrants will take over your land and put you in reservations “for your own good.”

If you identify with an organized religion, I will be bold in saying your religion preaches love, patience and charity. How loving, patient or giving are you to say your way of life is the best for the entire world or that no one seeking happiness can do so in any corner of the globe? In the Abrahamic faiths, the recurrent message is to love one another. Love can be letting others worship God (or not worship any deity) the way they feel is best. Charity is not just giving money, but meeting the needs of others. In Islam, a simple smile is a form of charity. Do you honestly feel that a religion viewing smiles as charity would encourage taking the lives of others?
The very constitution you try to use against freedom seekers supports the Declaration of Independence that demands all humans have the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Not everyone’s happy looks the same. The more oppressed a group feels, the more they will retaliate — and in case you were wondering, this could be were radicalization stems from.
The next time you try to use your religion or laws to defend your way of life, know that you are not alone. All humans on Earth are trying to defend their way of life and pursuit of happiness. You do not have to live the same as others; just understand that we are all different.

While we cannot all agree, as long as we are practicing love, patience and charity we can make the world a more happy and harmonious place to live. I challenge you to examine your faith, laws and self. Are you really trying to defend them for the good of humanity or simply yourself? Explore the beliefs and rights of others before you angrily push your agenda on others.
