California Bans Government Travel to States Against LGBTQ

California lawmakers are certainly demonstrating their priorities by voting to restrict funding for travel to the LGBTQ discriminating states of Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and Kansas. This means taxpayer money will not go toward plane tickets, hotel rooms, meals or other expenses in these states.

While it may not seem like a lot now, it will certainly add up. This ban is for state employees and officials as well as some colleges and universities, meaning sports teams and scouts are affected. House Bill 2 has cost North Carolina millions of dollars from businesses choosing to not do business with a discriminative state.

California has been seen as a progressive and trendsetting state and with their population of approximately 39 million people and a whopping 55 Electoral College votes, they can certainly shift the direction of United States politics.

Big players like California standing up to LGBTQ bullies will pave the way for other states to follow suit. When discrimination against one group is facilitated, it becomes easier to discriminate against others. Making progress towards anti-discrimination is a huge victory for the LGBTQ community and other discriminated groups. These actions can be carried over to include states and even companies that discriminate against others like immigrants and religious groups.

If a company has been known to support issues they do not think twice before finalizing that purchase.

At a time when it seems nothing can be done to combat a state’s radical decision to hinder progress, California proves otherwise. It is important for all states and their citizens to remember to vote with their wallets to combat political injustices.
