It’s Okay If Your Career Goal Is to Be a Good Wife and Mother

In the spirit of empowering women — because we are always in the spirit of empowering women — here’s a toast (non-alcoholic, of course) to the mothers, the wives, the awesome women who give the majority of their time and attention to holding down the home.
To the ladies raising awesome Muslims and all-around beautiful human beings.

It is a reality for those women who choose to be the ‘Head of Home Management’ to be discouraged or made to feel like they are wasting their time not pursuing traditional academic and career goals.

In a climate of feminism pushing a myriad of ideologies, I’d like to take a moment and acknowledge the platform that praises and cherishes the women whose career goal is to be an excellent wife and mother.
You are appreciated.
This isn’t a comparison piece, women are amazing at many and varied things. However, it is a reality for those women who choose to be the “Head of Home Management” (as my sister likes to say) to be discouraged or made to feel like they are wasting their time not pursuing traditional academic and career goals.
In what other area of achievement, because raising a family and establishing a righteous home is an achievement, is one discouraged from doing a good job?
Particularly, for the young women who start a family and are told that they are wasting their youth and should go back to school. There is nothing wasteful with seeing to the well-being of society, with being the “Family Manager” or “Head of Child Development.”

If being a mother was a paid position, could you imagine the pay just off of hours alone, not even taking into account the importance and labor of the job?

I’m throwing around all these CEO-ish sounding titles because they are unfortunately terms that must be used to highlight the importance of being a mother.
Society as a whole appears to measure importance by job titles and salary — and so Moms have not been getting their just due. If being a mother was a paid position, could you imagine the pay just off of hours alone, not even taking into account the importance and labor of the job?
How can we condemn a woman for choosing to be a mother over everything else and still propagate the ideology of choice and respect? How is mothering less than lawyering or doctoring? How is birthing and raising the world not a high powered career?

The least we can do is appreciate them and provide companionship and encouragement to the beautiful women who take on such a role.

As Muslims, we know the status of women is one of utmost importance — and the honor and responsibility of being a mother takes it to a whole other level.
Our mothers encompass so many roles. They are everything and anything we need them to be, when we need them to be it. The least we can do is appreciate them and provide companionship and encouragement to the beautiful women who take on such a role.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“A man came to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and said, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my fine treatment? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Then your father.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
So ladies, it’s okay if your goal in life is to be a good wife and mother — in fact, it’s ambitious and daring.
May Allah reward our mothers and continue to populate the world with women awesome enough and strong enough to be them. Ameen.
