    The Koran

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[24.1] (This is) a chapter which We have revealed and made obligatory and in which We have revealed clear communications that you may be mindful.
[24.2] (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.
[24.3] The fornicator shall not marry any but a fornicatress or idolatress, and (as for) the fornicatress, none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; and it is forbidden to the believers.

A more forgiving law in many ways than those found in Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

But more generally, if you truly want to understand Islam (or any religion) you would do better to read its history and listen to the testemony of its members than to go about (mis)interpreting its texts on your own.

it is certainly more forgiving than stoning your daughter to death in the threshold of your front door. the bible is utter nonsense. I know this because I’ve read it and spoken to many Christians throughout my life. I know quite a bit of Islamic history. the battle of badr, uhud and trench. Muhammad was orphaned at age 6. lost the protection of his uncle and had to flee to medina. I’ve read the charter of medina. how much history do I need to say that the verse that says to lash fornicators is a bad one? what history do I need to know to say that you shouldn’t mandate less inheritance for females based on, you know, them being female.
I ask muslim for their ‘testimony’ all the time. I read Islamic sites all the time. i’ll read your link. let’s see what it says.

        so what have I misinterpreted?

“Islam aims to purify individual persons and society.”

“If someone alters God’s laws in consideration of the culprit’s social position, this is surely the very worst kind of offence. ”
funny thing. I spoke with a local imam and he disagreed with your interpretation of zina. you mentioned a hadith of what omar said. this imam goes by the hadiths of Muhammad stoning adulterers. read the hadiths of bukhari, 81st or 82nd book. your link must be using Muhammad asad’s translation. most translations say ‘[unmarried] adulterer’ or ‘fornicator’. even so, no great mercy to be lashing people in public. this is ancient non-sense.
